Help me give my students a sensory area where they can escape the classroom without leaving the room. The chair bands will help my students with autism remain focused as they work on daily assignments.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a special education, resource teacher. I service K-2 grade students. My students all have IEPs (Individual Education Plans). Some need extra assistance in reading, math, and handwriting. All areas are a struggle for many of my students in different ways. My students are in a low-income level area and anything that I can do to help them succeed I will try to do. I love teaching students who are eager to learn but struggle with doing so. Many of my students shy away from completing their work because they struggle with reading, writing, and math. If my students are not able to accomplish basic writing, reading and math concepts, they will shut down and not attempt to complete any assignment given.
My Project
I have several students who have Autism and I feel that by adding items into the classroom environment will help with their sensory issues which will allow my autistic students to be able to go to an area where they can escape from the classroom without leaving the room.
Autistic children are very unique and need several different ways to release the stress of their own world.
I feel as if by adding items to the classroom that pin point autism will allow my students to be able to release their tension so that they can return to their work assignments and work effectively.
The items I have selected will give the students a variety of ways to release their frustrations without having meltdowns but instead placing their frustrations in sensory based items to help with their sensory overload.
