Being a middle schooler is tough as hormones kick in and school hierarchies form. It can be harder for students with special needs.
My students have special needs that are both visible and invisible, but all require a safe space that supports their emotional well being.
They come from different socio-economic backgrounds and different levels of familial support. Some need a break space on a daily basis, and some need it only occasionally.
My students range from kids with moderate to severe autism to students who live with PTSD. They navigate the world of middle school with tolerance and grace by showing up for each other and finding gratitude in the small places. Over half the children in the school come from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds and approximately 85% of my students come from that allocation. The special education department is expected to help all these children learn the tools they need to grow both cognitively and emotionally.
My Project
We are getting an upgrade and we need some help! The wonderful PTA at our school has given the special education department a bigger room to use for our sensory room!
Now not only will we have space for our kids with autism and other sensitivity special needs that need a break from being overloaded with lights and sound, but we will have a space for restorative circles for conflict resolution.
However, we need a room divider so that we can accommodate both in one room. Panels will be used to create the quiet space needed for overloaded nervous systems.
