Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a co-taught special education Pre-K classroom that consists of 42 3-year-old students. Half of the students in the class have special needs while all of them come from very low-income families. They all have diverse backgrounds including family structure and the different languages spoken.

The one thing they all have in common is that when they enter my classroom, I am their very first teacher and this school year will be their first ever school experience.

My Project

Sensory items, such as the ones I am requesting, help all students regardless of their needs, keep calm and stay focused throughout the day. These sensory toys and resources provide all children with an outlet so they can be better prepared for learning and interacting with others.

With the items, my students will be able to keep their little hands busy and have fun while learning.

In my search for sensory toys, I have found some new and interesting items that I am excited to share with my class. Some I have used and hoping to update while others will be a first for me and my students. One of the items I found were Push Bubble Pop Toys. These items are colorful, come in different shapes and keep little hands occupied while their minds learn.

Wiki sticks are used for kinesthetic learning activities, for non-verbal expression of emotion, as well as pre-writing and fine motor skills. Students can visualize and feel the formations the wiki sticks have taken on that match the classroom curriculum. I have used the sticks in the past to teach shapes and letters, as well as work with students who are visually impaired.

Last but certainly not least, batteries! Batteries are essential to my classroom because they will help keep our classroom sensory materials alive and running for a long time.
