Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach special education students with Autism in both Kindergarten and first grade. Many of these students have difficulty communicating due to a lack of language or because they are nonverbal. Due to their struggles with communication, my students can become frustrated easily and struggle to regulate their emotions.
I would love to provide a safe place in my classroom for them that is cozy and safe where they can go to take a break and manage their emotions.
My room is small and has no windows. It is difficult to separate the students who are struggling with their emotions from the others so I have included noise-cancelling headphones to prevent students from becoming triggered by their classmates. I have included light shades to help their sensitive eyes and make the room seem more open.
I am requesting comfortable chairs for the students to sit on when they are upset and fidgets and a bubble lamp to help them let out their emotions in a healthy and positive way.
My students have a lot to say and would love to participate with their peers more but need these materials to help them regulate their emotions. When their emotions are not regulated they may end up isolated by the other students or the nature of the situation.
