Help me give my students a sand and water table, flexible seating and sensory items, for a way to express themselves. This has been a difficult year and the students have arrived with many significant needs. Sensory items help them manage the big emotions they have through play.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a Title I school in the District of Columbia, and many of the children are from low-income households. Despite the fact that we do not always have access to materials traditionally found in classrooms, my students have helped me become more creative with found materials.
The children I serve are so creative and think of ideas for how to make things we need for our classroom.
We utilize Creative curriculum and will use materials such as toilet paper rolls and milk cartons to create items during our various studies, for example making egg rolls for a restaurant in our dramatic play area.
My Project
My students have had a particularly challenging year. They have experienced many forms of trauma during the pandemic and there is a significant need for help in managing their emotions. I would love to include some sensory materials into my classroom to help them manage these big emotions.
My students can use the water table and the light table to explore ways to make things happen and help their mental state.
Water is relaxing and the children can learn a lot of academic skills from playing with water. The flexible seating will make them more comfortable in the classroom and allow my students to learn in the way that works best for them. Young children need lots of movement and to feel at home in the classroom. I believe these materials will help them achieve a sense of comfort in their home away from home.
