This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are students with moderate to severe autism. We have sensory needs that cannot be met in a general education classroom. We are in a special education classroom and due to budget cuts, we do not have any sensory items such as therapy balls, a tent, peanut ball, etc.

We are a special education class of students with moderate to severe autism.

One of us has zero speech and several sensory needs and he is a fourth grader. There is another fourth grader who cannot sit on a chair. At the moment, the teacher has developed a soft cushion, but he really needs a therapy ball to sit on. The fifth grader is constantly going under the tables because he wants to escape and be by himself. He would really benefit from the tent. Our school is in Southern California and it is in a low income community. Due to budget cuts, the school and district is not able to purchase or meet all of our sensory needs. Our teacher is trying her best and makes us a lot of stuff, like blankets.

My Project

The balls will be used for the students who have difficulties sitting on a chair. They will also be used to give back massages to calm down the students who are very hyper. The balls will also be used for vestibular exercises. The tent will be used to relax after a tantrum, a place to read, or just a place to relax. The vibrating mini dome will be used as a calming mechanism and will encourage the students to sit down and do their work. The crocodile will be used for the students with tactile needs. The balancing seesaw will be used as an exercise for students with poor balance. Overall, the students with autism will have their sensory needs met and they will learn to do work for longer periods of time.

My students will be able to perform sensory exercises that they cannot perform at the moment, such as balancing, back massages, and have an area to relax. So please help my students meet their sensory needs.
