Sensory Motor Activities for Students with Special Needs

My students need sensory motor resources in order to engage themselves appropriately in their daily routine.

My Students

"If a child cannot learn in the way we teach them. We must teach them in the way the child can learn." My students are faced with multiple challenges physically and mentally, so it is important that we create opportunities for them to learn the way they are capable.

My students are extremely special.

They are loving, hard-working, and have a smile on their face upon arriving to school each day. They do not recognize their obstacles or the many challenges that they face daily working towards academic and functional goals. They attend a large public school and enjoy being social with their peers while participating in school-wide activities, special area, or playing on the playground with other classes. My students thrive on routine and a consistent schedule. They enjoy music, being outside, and opportunities to be social and included with others!

My Project

The resources we have requested are intended to assist students who struggle with sensory input. These resources will give our students the opportunity to meet the sensory integration needs of my students through deep pressure, oral motor input, and other calming tools. The textured spoons, Chew Stixx, Z-Vibe, and chewy bracelets will allow students to increase mealtime independence, introduce new foods and textures, and provide some students with the ability to calm themselves down. The sensory balls, Gel-E-Seat, lumindisk, and rocking horse are all other ways that students can provide themselves with appropriate sensory input. The rocking motion is one way in particular that some students with sensory processing challenges are able to soothe themselves so that they may participate in their daily routine at school comfortably and successfully. Each of these items is an extremely important part of our students' lives and allow them to overcome the obstacles they may face.

My students' challenges can inhibit the way that they learn.

Sensory exploration and input is crucial for my students because it allows them to focus on what is important or what they are being asked to do without their body and mind distracting them, making them uncomfortable, or interfering with their ability to work towards independence. By providing my students with various sensory tools, you will be able to allow them ways to calm themselves down, focus their attention, and grow!
