I have 6 students in my structured Autism class, 7/8th grade. They all have a visual icon schedule to follow. There are 13-14 activities every day. I would like for my students to make significant progress on their IEP goals using sensory materials. "Don't judge a book by it's cover".
My class is a Structured Autism class.
I have 6 students, one girl and the rest boys. My school is a great school to be at. The administration and staff are great. We go to general education P.E. 6th period. My students have fun and are making friends. My class was just opened two years ago. It was never here before. I started with nothing and little by little, I'm gathering materials. I have three students that are non-verbal. They have iPads from the district for communication. The rest have minimal speech. They are excited to come to school every day and learn.
My Project
Most of my students are very visual and tactile and learn best from art, music, and sensory materials. I adapt and modify their work to be at their level. My class is the only self contained class, moderate/severe. We have a garden, library, and a cooking class. We do those activities once a week. Every student in my class have sensory needs. The materials that I need is for their sensory needs. The washable sensory balls and noodles will help students with their sensory needs by relaxing them. The therapy putty is how they create and innovate. They show their art skills while using the putty to recreate the famous structures we study. The silly shapes sensory mats are good for my students because the feel of them is different and my students like different things that feels strange. Make a design sand pendulum is great for my students to understand science skills while also being artistic. By having sensory materials listed I can empower my students through art and science and basic development, and they will be able to focus longer.
With the sensory materials, they will be more attentive to the activity and will have a greater chance of staying throughout the whole activity.
I will work hard to make sure with the sensory materials that my students develop and grow during the school year. I will utilize all of these sensory items in my classroom to help my students balance their sensory needs and prepare for academic work.
