Sensory Materials for Special Needs Students

My students need items to help calm and organize their bodies. These items include: weighted blankets and vests, lap pads and fidget toys.

My Students

I am an occupational therapist that works with middle school and high school special needs students. My students are low functioning and struggling with self-regulation skills. They are in a classroom that has access to life skills equipment however they are unable to access this equipment due to their difficulties with sensory regulation.

These students need supports that will enhance their ability to engage in classroom learning opportunities by calming and organizing their body.

They would benefit from supplies that will help organize their sensory systems.

My Project

The materials requested as part of this project will help the students learn how to regulate their body and attend to their classroom work. I am requesting 2 types of regulating materials: weighted materials and fidgets.

The weighted materials (blanket, vest, etc.) will provide deep pressure to their muscles and joints which calms and regulates the nervous system.

The students can sit at their desks or in their alternative seating area and have the weighted materials on their body while focusing on learning.

The fidget toys provide the fingers and hands with a way of releasing energy without having to get up and leave the learning activity or environment. This will provide for increased opportunities for learning.
