Help me give my students a chance to fulfill their sensory input so my students are able to self regulate their emotions and allow them to open their mind to learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work in a specialized prekindergarten classroom with students of various ages and disabilities. Each of them come from very low income households and have diverse backgrounds including family structure and languages spoken. What they do have in common is that when they enter my classroom, I am their very first teacher and this school year will be there first ever school experience.
What is important to understand is that students with special needs do not always respond to conventional teaching styles and aids, thus educators need to harness methods and resources which cater to their individual manner of understanding and learning.
My hope is to fill my classroom with as many sensory based toys or activities as possible to keep my students calm and provide them with a secure learning environment. Items such as shaving cream and cornstarch are key ingredients to sensory based learning. It provides the sensory input that students crave that will ultimately allow them to be engaged in learning. The shaving cream can be uses as is. Students can work with it using their hands or materials from around the room. We also add it into art work to give it that necessary pop to make images stand out. Cornstarch added with water gives multiple dimensions of fun. When squeezed it feels firm and hard like a ball, when released it flows through your hand like water giving my students multiple sensory feelings.
Multiple cases are requested of each as supplies go quickly throughout the course or the school year.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
