ADHD? ASD? PDD? ADD? ODD? If any of these acronyms are familiar, you know someone that is struggling in the education setting. One way to meet these students' needs is through sensory learning.
All students, Pre-k through 5th grade, will spend time with the school counselor for various reasons.
These students are often nervous, anxious, scared, mad, happy, or excited about a personal experience. As such, it is my job to ensure students feel safe and secure when in my office. When students have something in their hands to manipulate, it can be calming.
The students on my campus come from households ranging from white collar to blue collar to unemployed. This diversity provides us with opportunities to teach students that everyone faces challenges at some point in their lives and it is OK to need help in those instances.
My Project
Sensory stimulation can alter students perceptions in an instant! Are your children ADHD, Autistic, or have another social/emotional concern or do you know a child that is? If so, you know that these students face tremendous hurdles each day. These materials will provide students with an outlet to release some of their pent up energy.
Items such as stress balls, fidget toys, Legos, and other manipulatives allow students time to cool down and relax. This time is imperative because it gives both the student and staff time to process and devise a plan of action. Oftentimes, when students get worked up or frustrated, they do not have an opportunity to step back and reflect on their experiences. These manipulatives will help teach students to process their feelings and think through their next step.
This project is important because oftentimes personal/social, emotional, and body language ques are over looked.
Sensory manipulatives provide students with tactile, hands-on activities that help them stay focused. Identifying individual students learning styles allows teachers to provide resources to enhance student success.
