My Students

My students at our beloved elementary school range from ages six to ten, Kindergarten through Fifth grade. We are a Distinct Special Education classroom with students who are highly impacted by their learning and physical disabilities. Our kiddos have a thirst to learn and participate but have extra needs and sensory fixations that require diverse and creative learning tools.

Our school is located in an urban environment in Seattle, with 95% of our students as minorities and students of color, and 70% on free or reduced lunch.

There is a lot of need for extra supplies in order to support and engage our students. Every bit helps and is greatly appreciated!

My Project

These materials will help fulfill the need for extra sensory stimulation for our kiddos in Special Education. All of our students learn differently than typical general education students, and that requires using more manipulatives and keeping our lessons visually and tactically pleasing.

We will use the light boards for math and language as we sort and count different manipulatives and use letters to build words on the light boards.

I also requested the geometry patterns to help students with creativity and sequencing shapes. Almost all of our kids are non verbal, which is why I requested the sign language boards to help them communicate with teachers and each other.

Many of the other items are for extra sensory stimulation. Our students need frequent breaks from academic work and we would like to have more activities to engage them in that are fun but will help with emotional regulation and fine motor skills. The sand, beads, foam, and art supplies would be a wonderful addition to our classroom to offer as an alternative to hopping on an iPad.
