I am a librarian to an amazing group of diverse learners. My students have the willingness to learn and the ability to do so. However, a problem we are facing in my school is that many of our students have difficulty paying attention or focusing on tasks because their minds and bodies are active or anxious. This tends to lead to redirects, discipline issues and more. I would love to be able to have items in our library that would allow students to focus their energy and anxiety on things that are developmentally age appropriate. The Montessori busy boards, Rubik's cubes and sensory wall will allow students to get their hands on items to get some of their energy out. The bubble tower and other items will help calm students that are anxious.
My goal is to be able to provide students with sensory toys, games, and materials that will allow them to calm themselves, while still keeping their busy or anxious minds education oriented.
The items in this project will allow students free choice to do what they need to be ready to learn and allow other students to learn. Our students need these avenues to freely choose what option best fits their needs at the moment. It allows them independence to make a choice that doesn't interrupt instruction.
