My Students
Seidel wrote, "Autism is as much a part of humanity as is the capacity to dream."
And the journey to understanding who they are and how to manage all aspects of their lives is the greatest challenge that our children with Autism face on a daily basis.
Autism is a cognitive developmental disorder that affects intellectual capacity, behavioral skills and social interaction.
These exceptional middle school students, residing in South Carolina, come from a diversified socio-economic background and are a true representation of the Autistic spectrum.
Often throughout the school day, our students have difficulty communicating their wants and needs, resulting in escalating frustration and spikes in their anxiety levels. These negative feelings along with their diverse learning and coping styles necessitate the need for resources, such as a sensory room, that when properly equipped, addresses a variety of tactile, auditory, and visual needs.
My Project
My Autistic students need an alternative method, such as Zuma Rocking Chair, Swing Carino Darling Hammock and One Touch Play Tent, to reduce their anxiety levels during the school day which will help increase their social and academic success. The world of autism is filled with uncertainty and unpredictability. Each student within the Autistic Spectrum requires multiple options when utilizing various forms of de-escalation.
The resources that have been selected to equip our Sensory Room address a variety of senses that aid in the process of redirecting negative behaviors and managing escalating levels of anxiety. Our unique populations of students are highly dependent in utilizing their visual, auditory, tactile, and verbal sensory skills with their varied learning styles.
We are asking for individuals or companies to donate an indoor swing for children over 250 pounds, as well as, a rocker and a sensory ball as a means of helping our students reduce stress and anxiety. We have also requested headphones and a tent as a way of blocking unnecessary sounds and distractions.
It is our heartfelt responsibility as teachers of Autistic children to help our students meet the sensory needs that their unique world challenges them with every day.
Due to educational budget cuts throughout our country, we sometimes need the help of outside sources, such as you, to develop helpful resources for our special needs students. By decreasing anxiety and frustration, these young people will be much better able to learn and enjoy classes. Your interest and concern are greatly appreciated and will truly help improve the quality of their lives.
