Sensory Integration Through Play

My Students

We will be opening a preschool disabled classroom this upcoming school year. Our classroom will welcome preschool students with disabilities ages 3-5. We would like to create a space that meets the sensory and academic needs of our students. I work primarily with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This is a big year for their social emotional growth and development as well as speech and language. The environment we are looking to create will allow multiple opportunities to communicate and socialize with peers through play.

We would like to have a designated sensory space inside our classroom for our students to have the opportunity to engage in sensory play .

Sensory integration will be built into our daily school schedule through student interest areas as well as a calming corner. We will encourage our students to participate through teacher modeling and support. With your help, we can provide a safe environment that provides multiple opportunities for interaction, communication and sensory integration. Thank you for helping our students feel at home!

My Project

Students with sensory needs, need an environment that they feel comfortable and safe in. Providing sensory integration in the classroom will allow us to include all children and provide an environment where they can be successful. It’s essential to provide the appropriate materials needed to meet the needs of all learners. It is important that furniture and materials are chosen carefully to accommodate all abilities and needs.

With the integration of these materials, we can teach students coping strategies and provide them multiple opportunities to participate in classroom activities while meeting their individual needs.
