My Students
My students come to school every day with smiles on their faces, a warm hello and ready to learn. They love school and they love being surrounded by friends and people who love working with them.
As their special education teacher, I push them to new limits, with patience, love, and excitement, because I know with the right tools they are capable of achieving great things.
I adapt the Common Core Learning Standards in a way that can reach my students at many different levels of learning, and in our classroom, sensory integration is key when adapting materials.
My students, all with autism or other severe cognitive disabilities, require unique sensory needs and integration to help them reach new heights in my classroom. Through sensory integration they learn everything from ELA, Math, Social Studies and Science to turn-taking and socialization skills and have fun while doing it!
My Project
Sensory supports, flexible seating and hands-on learning materials are must-haves when working with children with autism. As a second year teacher I am still working hard to gather the materials my students need to succeed. Each student has different needs, and I am trying to continue to build my toolkit.
My students are different but NOT less, and with your support they will be able to reach new levels.
The seating options, sensory balls, pencil toppers, and headphones will help keep my students focused for longer periods of time in the classroom. These tools help students with autism spectrum disorder manage their various sensory needs while being expected to remain seated in a classroom.
The sensory table, foam roller, brushes, and compression shirts will aid in sensory breaks while also students stay focused on the task required of them. These tools will aid my students in becoming aware of their body, or where their body is in space, which is a concept many people with autism spectrum disorder and other cognitive disabilities have a hard time processing.
Lastly, the learning tools requested will provide exciting visual and tactile ways or learning while also teaching various social skills when they work together in the classroom.
