I currently teach in a early childhood classroom with students who have Autism. My students are between the ages of 4 and 5 years old and fall all over the Autism Spectrum. Children with Autism have a very difficult time communicating their wants and needs as well as understanding and participating in social settings. There are 6 students in my classroom all who are very different from one another. In the classroom we use a lot of sensory integration to sooth the students and ease them through a full day of activities and tasks. Because each students is so different from one another, the need to have ample sensory tools is essential. I feel that one way to successfully provide adequate stimulus for my students is through art. I would like my student's to engage in art activities that allow them to touch, manipulate and create through the use of various mediums. My students all love to "get their hands dirty", meaning they find stumulation when they move their fingers through different textures such as glue and paint. In order to provide my students with the most rewarding school experience, I would like to provide them with art supplies such as finger paints, different types of paper, Crayola clay, large beads to string together, glitter, puffy paint, foam shapes to glue, putty, sponges to paint with, pipe cleaners, yarn, glue, craypaz, tissue paper and therapeutic music to listen to. With these sensory objects, my students will have the ability to engage in daily scholastic activities while easing their anxiety levels. Through the use of art, I will be able to enhance the students ability to particicapte in social settings as well as provide another foundation to embrace language. My students and I would be greatful for your help in making this year a truely successful one.
