My Students

Our classroom is full of fun-loving, diverse learners of many ages. We love to learn new skills, sit on a variety of fun "chairs," move around, and use technology. The growth our class has made over this school year is astounding.

Although we come from a small town in Iowa, the students in our class have had a variety of life experiences that help to contribute to their individual needs, both academic and behaviorally.

I am always amazed at the depth of discussion we can have! Still, we are always looking for new ways to learn and experience the world as it pertains to each individual student.

My Project

Many of the students I work with have a difficult time with self-regulation skills when they feel frustrated, overwhelmed, overstimulated, or upset. Research shows that providing students with a calm, sensory safe space to express their emotions will improve self-regulation skills. I am creating a sensory room for my students to learn these skills in order to help them navigate their school day (and life!) as efficiently and appropriately as possible. This crash pad and sensory play kit will help to kick-start my sensory room.

"Kids these days" are constantly bombarded with stimulus from the world around them.

Sometimes children do not know the best way to deal with all of the added stimuli. These sensory materials will help my students learn how to cope with undesired emotions and feelings, allowing them to quickly return to a state of calm and rejoin their class.

Students can run, jump, and "crash" onto the crash pad when they need more sensory input. If they need less input, they can curl up on the crash pad for a relaxing, comfortable place to calm down. The sensory play items provide similar stimulus on a smaller scale. Different textured balls allow students to choose the right tool for self-regulation. These materials are the first step to creating a safe environment for little people to deal with big emotions.
