Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There is never a dull moment in my inclusive preschool classroom. Although sometimes these little bodies just need a break. These are the materials that could allow my students just that.
I am a first year teacher for 10 general education students and seven students with special needs.
I have several students who are on the Autism spectrum. Typically, individuals with Autism have many sensory needs. Their senses are heightened, meaning everything is louder, brighter, and more overwhelming. Similar to how we need to take a break if we have been on sensory overload, individuals with Autism need breaks frequently. We might crawl into our bed or plop down on the couch. Those with Autistic tendencies might enjoy spinning gears, rolling on a ball, or even building something just by themselves. Allowing my students to have access to these items helps them cope with the overwhelming sensations they are having, thus allowing them to learn and experience more when they are in the classroom.
My Project
Students with Autism need a lot of sensory input. It is similar to us having an itch on our skin and not being able to scratch it, which results in frustration.
My students have needs that they often struggle to alleviate.
The "body sock" will help children with sensory processing disorders to work on "position in space" skill, and it also provides heavy work/deep pressure input that is both calming and organizing. Through all of these movement activities in the "body sock", they will have comfortable, resistive material to push against and have pushing against them. The ball pit will provide my students with a multi-sensory environment that will awaken their senses or calm them down, depending on the child. In the world of Autism Spectrum Disorders, and even for those who have certain sensitivities to noises and sounds, headphones can be a necessity to coping with the world around them. In fact, noise reduction headphones allow some children with Autism to thrive in crowded rooms.
Some of my students with special needs have sensory behaviors that are disruptive.
Due to the students having frequent disruptive sensory behaviors, it limits their chances for inclusion and friendships, as well as disrupts instruction for their peers.
With these materials, my students will be able to calm themselves, allowing them to become more like their typically developing peers and allow them to have more success in social settings and in society.
