Sensory Garden Seating and Planter for Students With Autism

My Project

We are seeking funding for two wooden benches with built-in planters to serve as central features in our school’s developing sensory garden and outdoor classroom—a space designed to support students with autism and other sensory processing needs.

These benches will serve a dual purpose.

They will provide a quiet, comfortable seating area where students can decompress, self-regulate, and enjoy the calming effects of nature. The attached planters offer students the chance to engage in interactive gardening. We'll grow herbs, flowers, and vegetables selected for their soothing scents, textures, and colors—plants that promote sensory integration and emotional well-being.

Gardening has been shown to reduce anxiety and enhance focus, and being in a peaceful green space can help students feel more grounded and better able to cope with stress or overstimulation.

By integrating these bench-planter units into our sensory garden, we are creating a nurturing space where students can explore with their senses, learn through hands-on experiences, and enjoy restorative moments outdoors. This project supports both therapeutic and educational goals—fostering independence, mindfulness, and a deeper connection to the natural world.

This project will benefit, in fact, all students at our school. It will not only beautify the school, it will also raise awareness of the needs of our students with autism and the accommodations we can easily make to improve their experience at our school.
