Most of my students are low-income and suffer from emotional disabilities due to experiencing trauma at a young age. Their disability makes it hard for them to self-regulate their emotions and stay on task in the classroom.
I work in an elementary as a School Psychologist at a high needs school outside of a major city.
Part of my role at my school is to provide individual and small group counseling to my students in order to teach them social skills and self-regulating skills.
My Project
As a School Psychologist I work with students in small social skills groups in order to help teach them how to identify their emotions, self-regulate their bodies, and socialize with same age peers. Students will special needs, especially disorders such as Autism and ADHD, benefit from receiving additional support in learning social emotional skills in a small group setting outside of the general education classroom.
These tools will give my students the opportunity to practice social skills and emotional regulation skills while in a small counseling group.
The games and sensory toys will provide tangible examples of how student can regulate. While the posters will give the students visual examples. Allowing students to practice in a smaller environment will increase the likely that they will be able display these small skills in their general education classroom.
