Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are currently in a fourth through sixth grade Special Day Class (Moderate-Severe Disabilities) attending a public elementary school. My students are curious explorers who love to perform, play, and learn. They love activities that include singing, dancing, building projects, socializing with their friends in general education, and, basically, anything that brings more energy to their learning.
My students benefit from hands-on materials, visual supports, technology, and life skills items that help them mediate the effects of their disabilities by compensating through other avenues of learning with multi-modal processing.
They are a dynamic and cooperative group of children who enjoy projects that involve as many people as possible. We generally try to tailor all of the materials to meet my students' needs in the general education setting so that they can learn beside their peers in their own way.
My Project
The weighted blanket, floor rug, and noise-reducing headphones can help my students become more comfortable in the classroom learning environment.
Some of my students with sensory needs feel more comfortable to learn when their sensory needs are being met.
The rug can be used for lying or sitting down on the carpet while reading to offer flexible seating options. This can help making reading time more comfortable and accessible than simply sitting on a chair at their desk.
Their noise-reducing headphones are helpful for students who have noise sensitivity, especially when in situations where the environment can be loud. The weighted blanket is helpful for those who need to feel pressure in order to feel relaxed.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
