My students need yoga activities, body sox and sensory motor activities.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Block's classroom raised $718
This project is fully funded
I work in a self-contained special education school for children with a variety of disabilities. This year I will be a sensory teacher working with children with autism. I understand the sensory needs of children with autism and am excited to begin my new position.
Many children with autism suffer from Sensory Integration Dysfunction. Students with Sensory Integration Dysfunction cannot organize their thoughts or physical behavior. Because they cannot organize themselves they feel very uncomfortable all the time, they cannot judge where they are in their environment. In these students we see behaviors that are considered strange, hand flapping, rocking, covering their ears constantly, and more. These behaviors disrupt their learning and are socially stigmatizing. In addition they cannot figure out what they should pay attention to and have difficult time learning. Children with Sensory Integration Dysfunction are affected in all areas.
Sensory Therapy helps these students to get organized so that they can learn and function in the classroom and the world. I will be working with classes in the kindergarten, first and second grade. Between these classes the students have a variety of needs. I am asking for a variety of supplies that can be used to help me start a sensory program.
Simple activities help my students to explore their environment without overwhelming their senses. Activities such as yoga will also help my students to gain awareness of their bodies. As the sensory teacher I will travel to each class and help the students focus and learn in their own classrooms. Please help my students gain self-awareness.
