My students need sensory materials such as Theraputty, Soft Feely Box, and Soft & Squeezy Animals to stimulate their interest in speech therapy!

My Students
My students are special in many ways. As their speech teacher, I work on improving a wide range of communication skills. Some of my students have difficulty expressing themselves socially. Some of my students have a limited vocabulary. Some of my students do not speak at all. I strive to find interesting and creative ways to motivate these children to express themselves and communicate effectively with the people around them.
Special education makes up an important part of our school.
My students may be identified with autism, intellectual disabilities, or learning disabilities. Whether these students are in specialized classrooms or are part of the general education setting, I work to address their needs in fun and engaging speech sessions. A majority of my students are exposed to languages other than English, in their homes, and come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Despite the obstacles stacked against them, these students come to school ready and eager to learn.
My Project
Soft and sensory materials are especially stimulating for students with Autism. They grab my students' attention in ways that other materials just can't. My students with Autism are always more motivated to participate during speech therapy sessions when presented with sensory toys and activities. They can use functional communication to request Theraputty. They can talk about what they found in the Soft Feely Box toy. The Soft and Squeezy animals, including farm animals, ocean animals, and wild animals, are motivating and safe for younger students to engage in pretend play. A room divider will help keep their visual attention on the sensory items presented to them.
Sensory materials are key for motivating students with Autism.
Speech therapy is an essential part of my students' school day. The materials I have requested will help my students stay motivated and encourage them to communicate in fun and functional ways!
