My Students

As a special education teacher in an alternative school, I see students daily who are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, my students are eager to learn both academics and life skills in order to create for themselves a better life.

All of the students in my classroom have lots of energy and will often find items to "fidget" with as we are working.

Because of their low socioeconomic status and the fact that many are being raised in single parent households, many of my students are not provided with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. Although I cannot control their home lives and their lives outside of school, I can certainly control their experiences during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire them to become productive members of society.

My Project

All of the students in my special education classroom have been identified with ADD and / or ADHD. I teach a high school class of rowdy boys and girls who are very interested in learning and becoming productive members of society.

These students often have a difficult time settling down to work and enjoy, and benefit, from sensory stimulation that is appropriate in a classroom setting.

My students are hard workers who are always trying to find something to "fidget" with while working - this can be anything from a lid to a bottle or a pencil. I would like to provide them with a sensory bin that has various sensory fidgets that they can utilize while working without interfering with the school work of others.
