Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teacher kindergarten in San Jose, CA at Meadows Elementary school. I teach half day kindergarten. I also have a partner teacher who teachers students in the afternoons. My school is in a rough part of town where parents are afraid to take their children to the park. Kindergarten children learn through experiences. One of the very best ways that they learn is through sensory experiences--by touching, feeling, and manipulating things with their hands. Our students miss out on many of these exploration activities because they are not allowed to play outside. We can help provide these experiences in our kindergarten classroom. One of the best ways that we can address this type of learning is through the use of sensory tables. Sensory tables can be used for many things besides sand or water. Children can build, dig for fossils, mix dough, and experience new textures. They can even use alphabet molds to make words in sand and a fishing game to learn their letters. These acitivities help them to develop strong background knowledge of the world to help them to understand and categorize experiences for the rest of their lives. I am requesting the table trays, sand, alphabet molds, an alphabet fishing game with lower and upper case letters, sand and water toys. This table would be used by students this school year and countless students in the years to come. Thank you so much for taking the time to consider helping my students!
