I teach in a special education classroom with students that have severe mental and behavioral disabilities. All of my students have different diagnosis that range from autism, opposititional defiant disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar or emotional disturbance. We also have students that receive special education services because of the their sensory needs due to their mental and physical disabilities. Our students have what we call a "sensory diet" and visit the sensory room 2-3 times a day. These sessions are vital in maintaining the behavior of our students.
My Project
Some kids seem to have trouble handling the information their senses take in—things like sound, touch, taste, sight, and smell. There are also two other less well-known senses that can be affected—the first is a sense of body awareness, while the second involves movement, balance, and coordination. Also, kids with sensory issues can be oversensitive to input, undersensitive to input, or both. While sensory processing issues are not a learning disorder or official diagnosis, they can make it hard for children to succeed at school. For instance, overly sensitive kids respond easily to sensory stimulation and can find it overwhelming. The equipment needed to meet sensory needs can vary but we typically use trampolines, yoga balls, peanut balls, vestibular swings, bands, etc. We also prefer having mats so that our students can participate as comfortably as possible while in the floor. Our students visit the Sensory Room 2-3 times a day. We can not properly meet the needs of our students without these supplies.
