This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in the South Bronx at a District 75 school. District 75 provides highly specialized instructional support for students with significant challenges, such as: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Significant cognitive delays, Emotional disturbances, Sensory impairments, and Multiple disabilities.

As we have seen COVID-19 has had a severe negative impact on a student’s social-emotional well-being, and academic achievement.

But it has also had a significant impact on their physical education. We in District 75 support the most challenging of children academically, socio-emotionally, and physically across the New York City public school system. We find ourselves struggling to acquire necessary resources to put on our annual “Sensory Day". Sensory Day is an opportunity for our students to engage in outdoor coordinated activities that support all areas of their development (Physical, Socio-emotional, and academic).

Since the beginning of this pandemic physical activity in a school setting was all but taken away. Our “Sensory day” will be an opportunity for our students to engage in physical activity that is socially-distanced but social, whole-body beneficial, and fun. Covid-19 has done enough to push our students back! Please help us put on a Sensory Day full of lots of physical activity, and fun for our students.

My Project

“Sensory” is a word that goes hand and hand with our populations of students. Besides the five senses of smell, taste, sight, hearing, and touch, individuals with autism can also struggle with their sense of movement and balance. People with autism might be over-sensitive to certain sensations, which means that just a small amount of that sensation will stimulate them. Students with autism can display stimulation in a multitude of ways.

Some students can be extremely excited and joyous, some anxious, and some angry even scared.

However as a special education teacher who has experienced all these stimuli in students I can say without a doubt when you give our students the space to express, decompress, and hone in their senses those very same sensory struggles can turn into their superpower.

“Sensory day” would take place in the school yard. All requested supplies will go towards creating socially-distanced, but still social spaces where students can engage in physical activities, healthy sensory stimuli, and old fashioned fun. Students will use scooters to ride around, kinetic sand and art to decompress, and obstacles courses for our students too show off all their emotional and physical growth during this pandemic. Each activity spaced out, and heavily monitored and sanitized by staff.

Another great sensory love of our students is Bubbles. We hope to be able to bring bubbles to our event in the safest of ways using Bubble machines. Each machine will be set up, pre-filled, sanitized, and would require no contact with anyone's mouth. Please help us help our students turn sensory struggles to sensory gains that will push them even further.
