Within our multiple disabilities classroom we work on identifying emotions and developing appropriate coping strategies when those strong emotions present themselves. A calm corner provides a safe and positive space for students to express their emotions and recenter themselves, so they are available to learn. My students have been making great use of the tools that we currently have but are in need of comfortable seating for working through their emotions.
A crash pad would be beneficial for sensory seeking students who has a high threshold for sensory input.
This means that in order for that person to register, acknowledge, recognize or notice that input, they require a lot more frequency, intensity or duration of the input than someone with a typical threshold. The crash pad would allow these sensory seeking students the ability to obtain this input in a safe way.
The light single colored rug would assist visual sensory seeking students by creating a calming color for them to focus on while taking deep breaths or other regulating strategies.
A bean bag chair will provide a comfy spot for students to engage in mindfulness activities such as rainbow breathing.
In conclusion, a calm down corner with comfortable seating is an important tool for helping my students to address their emotions in a beneficial and healthy way.
