My Project
We are Inquiring to purchase a various item to assist in implementing more efficient accessible activities to promote Sensory integration during movement class.
I work in a Special Education setting where my students are battling many challenges within themselves.
A majority of the students are on the autism spectrum. My students range from 3rd grade to 8th grade. This means there are multiple learning styles among my students. It is imperative to provide our students with assess to various outlets on a daily basis. I plan to stimulate and strengthen my students’ minds through various movement activities.
The daily schedule for the movement class consists of Monday Zumba, Tuesday Obstacle Course, Wednesday Yoga, Thursday Step Aerobics fitness, and Fridays free style dancing/Fun Friday. The blackout curtains will be helpful to make the room darker during yoga to promote quiet mind, improve focus, and clarity. The spinning chair will be used to improve balance and coordination, stimulating left and right brain, core strength, socialization skills, concentration, and more. The stepping stone will be used for balance, coordination skills, and gross motor skills, and more. The neck pillow will give the students a sense of sensory vibrating sensation. This pillow promotes sensory pressure to help calm students when they are having a hard time. Each of these activities will serve a purpose in promoting being actively Healthy and mindfulness to help our students succeed to the best of their abilities.
In addition, I plan to set up a sensory corner for when my students feel too stimulated and need a break. The sensory items will be used to soothe students’ needs so they can feel secure enough to get back to their movement activity. This will also help students focus their attention throughout the day.
