Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The students I serve are in a moderate to severe special day class for transitional kindergarten through first grade. Most of my students are functioning at a pre-symbolic level of communication and learning, and they acquire knowledge through repetition, routines, and cause-and-effect activities. Several of my students have extensive support needs, including being non-verbal or minimally verbal, and some require AAC systems or gestures to communicate. A few of my students are also medically fragile, requiring health support throughout the day. Many exhibit sensory-seeking behaviors and need significant assistance with self-regulation, engagement, and transitioning between activities. Their disabilities range from Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability, and genetic conditions such as Down syndrome, to rare medical diagnoses that impact mobility, feeding, and cognition.

I aim to provide an environment that meets each student at their developmental level—one that offers access to toys and materials that are both engaging and appropriate for their cognitive and physical abilities.

My classroom prioritizes promoting engagement, developing self-regulation strategies, encouraging joint attention, and increasing purposeful communication. Every activity is intentionally designed to be accessible, meaningful, and aligned with their IEP goals and individual learning needs.

A few of the items from my wishlist is to build a Sensory/Calming Corner for my classroom. Right now all I have is a giant beanbag and my students seek more sensory input. The switch device and toy is to promote engagement with my students.
