Sensory Charge Station

Help me give my students a sensory classroom that addresses their sensory needs.

My Project

Next school year, 2024-2025, I will have a fully self-contained classroom of 8 students in grades K-4 who are all on the autism spectrum with varying degrees of behavior problems. The students' communication ranges from completely non-verbal, to minimal speech in the form of echolalia. All of the students have sensory needs that I would like to address via the creation of this Sensory Charge Stations in the classroom.

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience sensory processing differences, making them more sensitive or less responsive to various stimuli.

Recognizing and accommodating these sensory needs can significantly contribute to decreasing behavioral problems and increasing compliant behaviors among students.

Providing sensory breaks in several stations with a sensory wall that includes a busy board and sensory wall toy, a hanging chair, the liquid sensory tiles, and the lava lamp that focuses on vestibular therapy and sensory integration, will help regulate sensory input and reduce the likelihood of disruptive behaviors. Establishing these designated sensory stations within the classroom allows students to relax, help ease anxiety, and calm their anxious little minds when feeling overwhelmed, promoting self-regulation and preventing potential meltdowns.

The books would be used in another station to address academic learning, providing hands-on experiences to explore numbers and letters, words. By fostering a positive and supportive environment that acknowledges and addresses sensory needs, I can create a foundation for increased compliance and positive behavior among students on the autism spectrum.
