Their eyes lit up as they explored the sensory tools, art supplies, and our new whiteboard space. Some students who typically struggle to sit still gravitated toward the sensory tools right away, and I could see the difference almost instantly—they were calmer, more focused, and ready to participate. Others couldn't wait to organize the art materials and start sketching ideas. It was one of those special classroom moments where excitement and gratitude filled the room.\r\n\r\nWe recently used the materials during a collaborative science project where students worked in small groups to design and model solutions to real-world problems. The whiteboard became our brainstorming hub—students mapped out ideas, asked questions, and built on each other's thinking. The art supplies allowed them to create hands-on prototypes and visual displays that brought their concepts to life. Throughout the process, the sensory tools helped students regulate their emotions and maintain focus during group work, which made collaboration more productive and positive.\r\n\r\nNext, students will refine their projects and present their solutions to the class, practicing both academic skills and public speaking. They'll use the whiteboard to explain their thinking and the art materials to enhance their presentations. The supplies have already become meaningful parts of our daily routine. Students are using the art materials during independent work, small-group activities, and choice time to express their thinking through drawing, coloring, and designing. One of the first projects we completed was an open-ended art response to a story we read together, and it was incredible to see students who are usually hesitant writers confidently communicate their ideas through artwork instead.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new supplies, their excitement was immediate and contagious. They were especially drawn to the markers and the beanbag chair, which quickly became a favorite reading and reflection spot in our classroom. The beanbag chair has created a calm, inviting space where students can read, cool down, or take a quiet moment when they need it. Several students have shared that it makes the classroom feel more comfortable and welcoming, which has positively impacted focus and engagement.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will continue using these materials as part of our literacy and humanities lessons. They will use the art supplies to create visual representations of characters, settings, and themes, as well as to reflect on their learning in more creative ways. The introduction of flexible seating and interactive learning tools has completely transformed our classroom environment. The donut cushions, wobble stools, and chair bands have been a hit since I got them. They've become so popular that we've implemented a rotation list to ensure everyone gets a turn. These options provide a vital outlet for physical energy, particularly the chair bands, which allow students to stay focused and productive while seated at their desks. \r\n The mobile flip chart stand allows me to conduct small-group reteaching and targeted instruction anywhere in the room, making our lessons more dynamic and responsive. The privacy shields have created dedicated \"distraction-free zones.\" Students now proactively use them not just for assessments, but whenever they need to enter a state of deep focus. The students love using the whiteboards and many students choose to use it to show their work for their online assignments, instead of using the digital tools. It's also a great way for me to quickly assess student learning and participation. \r\n Students thrive when they have a voice in their learning environment. These items have done more than just furnish a room; they have transformed our classroom into a space that respects individual needs and encourages autonomy. Even after school hours, I find myself using the wobble stool while planning, a testament to the comfort and functionality these items bring to our space.\r\n Thank you for investing in my students' success and for providing the tools they need to truly flourish.","fullyFundedDate":1759601081165,"projectUrl":"project/beyond-the-desk-empowering-student-choi/9781979/","projectTitle":"Beyond the Desk: Empowering Student Choice and Collaboration","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Zukeran","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3097512"},{"teacherId":8820920,"projectId":9776593,"letterContent":"On behalf of my students and myself, I want to express our deepest gratitude for your generous donation.
