The students that will benefit from this project range age 12 to 15. They are kids from a small urban community. Each student has different academic needs, represents a different background, and has different goals for the future. This project will focus on independent learning skills aided by technology.
The students in this class have a variety of disabilities including specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, health and hearing impairments, cognitive delays, and autism spectrum disorder.
We have to work on self-regulation and communication on a daily basis.
All of my students come to school with a history of adverse childhood experiences. Many students are so immersed in social media and immediate peer response, they lack self regulation skills and problem solving skills. Our students with deficits in attention and problem solving skills will benefit from this project as it will encourage them to work independently to complete tasks.
My Project
Our class utilizes computers and iPads daily. Having a classroom set of the over the ear headphones will allow a few students with unique needs an opportunity to use the same product as their peers. Everyone knows teenagers with special needs want to fit in. A particular student complains that wearing on ear headphones is uncomfortable and causes pain to his sensitive ear. A second student has to choose whether to wear the hearing aid or the earbuds during this class activity since he can't wear both at the same time. The headphone selected will fit over the ear and hearing aid. If the whole class uses the same type of headphone everyone would be getting something to help them focus on achievement and no one would be treated differently.
Having a good set of headphones will allow students with sensory challenges and attention issues to stay focused and do their best work.
We do most of our daily reading practice on computers with earbuds which can be uncomfortable. In addition we do state level and district level assessments online and could utilize this product to get more focus on achievement.
