Sensory Calming Spaces for Two Early Intervention Pre-School Classrooms

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The amazing kids that I’m privileged to work with are part of one of three self-contained classrooms for pre-schoolers with special needs within a diverse school district in CA. These classes include students who are deaf or hard of hearing, who have autism, or other developmental differences.

They constantly inspire me and others in our community through their creativity, joy of learning, and perseverance!

Our kids thrive in small supportive classrooms that feel more like a family, with a focus on social emotional support and helping them become more independent.

My Project

The children I work with learn best when given access to calming sensory regulation tools. Our amazing team of teachers, aides, and support providers (Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist, Physical Therapist, Psychologist etc.) would like to create a calming area that will benefit multiple pre-school classrooms.

Each class will have a tent to reduce auditory and visual stimuli, and will include different textured pillows and sensory regulation tools that the children can access in order to promote self-regulation and social emotional growth, which in turn allows them to return to classroom activities with their peers.

These spaces will help promote better learning with less emotional and sensory dysregulation and allow our students some control and independence over their emotional and sensory needs.
