At my school, we have a classroom specifically for kindergarten-2nd grade Autistic Students. The students in this classroom have many differences in how they process sensory input, including being more sensitive to the sights, sounds, and movements that happen within their learning environment. However - physically, these classrooms are the same as the rest of the school - open floorplan rectangle, bare floors, cement walls and ceilings. It is a constant challenge to adjust the amount of sight and sound input our students are distracted by in this layout.
Without a calming break space and staff's ability to adjust work areas, it can be nearly impossible for our students to focus on their schoolwork.
These dividers make it possible to break up the space to limit visual and auditory distractions as teaching happens in other spaces in the room. While expensive, they are an extremely effective tool to help achieve this goal!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
