My Students

My students are creative, active and full of a desire to discover and explore! My classroom is Early Childhood Special Education with students with severe to profound special needs. They are impaired in their functioning in respect of basic awareness and understanding of themselves, of the people around them and of the world that they live in. They have limited communication skills, dependency on others to satisfy basic needs and a diverse range of characteristics that lead to significant deficits in reaching developmental and academic milestones.

They benefit most from hands-on experiences that involve all their senses and that are relevant and meaningful.

They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. We work as a team to meet the individual needs of all of our students and help them to achieve school and life success.

Each child in my classroom can love learning, but the method and environment in which they learn best, varies greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative communication and delivery styles to ensure that each student's needs and goals are met, right where they are!

My Project

Sensory books are engaging and entice children to participate by captivating their focus and through multi-sense stimulation and will allow the child to participate with the book through visual, tactile, auditory, and kinesthetic inputs so they work on various skills at one time. These books provide a stimulating visual, tactile, and sensory experience while teaching them about emotions, social cues, counting, colors, animals, and numbers, and more. My students would be encouraged to interact through touch and feel panels which helps with reading and instills a lifelong love of books. They will build their vocabularies and the textures will help them associate what they feel with the word it describes which will enrich their language. The board books will make sure they will last and the large visuals and interactive pages encourage the students to explore the library without needing adult assistance.

For children with autism, books are a great way to combine playtime with critical development of knowledge and skills.
