Ms. Collette and Ms. Robinson from Thornton CO is requesting Flexible Seating through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Sensory Bins for Learning

My students need some extra flexible seating in the class, as well as sensory items such as kinetic sand and plastic animals so that we can create rice and water bead bins with themes for learning.

My Students

I am an Occupational Therapist (OT) who works with multiple children that have significant special needs! These include being nonverbal, Global Developmental Delays, Cortical Blindness, Autism, Down Syndrome, Sensory Processing Disorder, Hydrocephalus, Ataxia and Traumatic Brain Injury, to name just a few. Most of these children are nonverbal and need assistive technology for basic communication. In addition, they have multiple sensory, cognitive, motor and educational needs.

These students come from a low socioeconomic neighborhood, with 80-90% of the students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

Funding for materials in the school is extremely limited due to district budget shortfalls. Parents and staff do not have access to these items outside of school and it is important that students are able to learn and thrive when they are at school.

As an OT it is my passion to help these amazing students learn, grow, adapt and become as independent as possible in their activities of daily living, especially within education. We all learn and experience the world in different ways... and with your help, I will be able to offer resources, tools and opportunities to some of our children who need them the most!

My Project

We are working on putting together some fun sensory bins filled with kinetic sand, water beads, rice, beans, etc., with educational themes attached to add to experiential learning in a fun, tactile, sensory way for students with special needs. We will need kinetic sand, molds, and ocean animals to help create the bins.

We are also working on adding to the limited flexible seating resources we have in the class to increase positioning, sensory input and learning.

We have requested a cube chair, as the children in the classroom love these and we don't ever have enough! Please, would you help our class to get a few things that would make a world of difference for the students?
