Help me give my students a safe place to learn healthy coping mechanisms and emotional regulation!

My Students

I have some of the very best students at Red Mountain Elementary. I work with Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade students who receive Special Education services. Our school is especially mindful of inclusion and all of our Special Education students are part of their General Education classroom with their typical peers. However, my students get to work with me once or twice a day for reading or math and once per week for social skills.

Something that we like to focus on is social emotional learning and growth.

We do this through weekly lessons on what it means to be socially and emotionally aware and through daily tasks such as learning new coping mechanisms like deep breathing and even yoga! My goal is to create a safe space for students to learn and grow and I need your help!

My Project

Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and regulate one's emotions and understand the emotions the others. This can be difficult for younger students, students with social emotional needs, students with Special Education services, and students who may not be learning these essential skills in their homes. In order to grow academically, students must feel safe in their setting and learn to understand their own emotions. It is also essential for students to learn to navigate their big emotions, such as frustration, hurt, anger, and even joy! Learning to use sensory tools, emotional regulation techniques, and having a safe place to emote will help students to learn and grow in the classroom setting. This will extend to their home environments; they will continue to carry these essential skills with them throughout life.

With these items, I will create a safe space in my classroom: a calming corner.

The room divider will be used to create separation from the rest of the classroom, to remove the academic expectation from the environment. The saucer chair is for the student to sit in while they are working on regulating their emotions. The dizzy disc spinner provides kiddos who need vestibular stimulation the chance to regulate. The noise cancelling headphones allow the kiddos to block out auditory stimulation that may be causing them stress. The jellyfish light tank provides a calming visual stimulation to help de-escalate a big emotion such as anger or fear. The changing-sequin pillowcases & pillows provide a physical stimulation and calming sensation as the kiddo uses their hands to change the sequins from one color to another; these also provide comfort and when the kiddo hugs the pillows they are provided with another physical sensory stimulation. The other items such as play-doh, magnet letters, etc. will be used for sensory.
