Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a Pre-K class of 3 and 4 years olds with varying exceptionalities, including physical impairments, learning disabilities and sensory impairments. The goal of the class is to teach these students social and self-help skills, while also teaching pre-school academic skills. We work to give our students the best head start for Kindergarten.
My students work hard to be able to communicate and interact with others.
We strive to teach our students to be independent and learn social skills.
My Project
Our classroom has a large population of students with difficulties maintaining their attention on a task. Although they are still young, through sensory play they can learn to maintain their attention. The sensory chair will help students when sitting at small group tables be able to wiggle, therefore leaving their hands free from fidgeting to complete group work.
Sensory play also helps children learn effective ways to cope with anxiety and fidgeting.
We feel that by adding specialized sensory items, the students will learn ways to control their impulses so that they can focus on non-preferred tasks. Sensory items will also be used to calm students when they feel overstimulized. Concentrating on the feel of a textured beanbag can be calming. By introducing these items daily and teaching relaxing techniques, the students will learn how to use them when they become aggitated.
