Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a teacher of a 12:1:1 Special Education class in the Northern Bronx. My students are the age of most 6th and 7th graders, but function at a pre-K to 1st or 2nd grade level. I have been with my students for three years, and I have seen great progress in many areas. One thing that I have learned in working with my students is that they benefit immensely from sensory input and sensory stimulation. We are studying the seasonal changes this year as one of our goals. As we study Fall, I have realized that my students have not spent a lot of time in the outdoors observing nature. I would like to enrich their education by taking them for a wonderfully stimulating outdoor adventure as we study Fall. Having grown up on a farm, I know that farms are a perfect setting to observe seasonal changes. I have researched a farm in neighboring Queens, Green Meadows, that takes students on a tractor-drawn hayride throughout the farm's acreage. I think this would provide an incredible "classroom on wheels" opportunity to observe firsthand the signs of Fall. At the conclusion of the hayride, students are taken to pick a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch. I do not think my students have ever picked a pumpkin off the vine before, and I know this would provide wonderful sensory input for them. On top of all these amazing educational and sensory-based activities, students will see and handle farm animals and observe how they adapt to colder weather. I know that this field trip will provide experiencial learning that will not be forgotten. Thank you for helping make this happen.
