I teach in an Early Childhood Special Education Classroom with students ages 3-5. Our classroom is in an urban setting with a diverse population, and while the students present with a variety of cognitive, emotional and physical needs they can show a tremendous capacity for growth. While many have received specialized services since birth, others have just been identified as having additional needs. Whatever the circumstances, we welcome all to our room!
Part of what makes our classroom particularly unique is that we have the opportunity to participate with inclusion with two additional preschool classrooms.
We work hard to provide a least restrictive environment and look for opportunities for our students to engage with different peers throughout the day. The engagement and growth for our students has been fantastic.
My Project
My students come into the room with a huge variety of needs. Some are able to sit and attend to information, while others are unable to handle loud noises, sit with a group or even tolerate certain food items. When my students are still learning to cope with a new environment, they are not yet ready to start the learning process. They are still learning how to adjust to the setting and learn school behaviors!
Materials like weighted lap pads and blankets help to calm the body so students can sit and fidgets like a color mix, newtons cradle, and gumfun can keep hands busy so students don't touch other people.
Wrist weights can be worn around the room by students who have poor body awareness and often run into other students or furniture in the room. A weighted stuffed animal can be a comfort tool for a friend having a tantrum, as well as helping them to center their body. All of these things seem simple, yet help students take one more step towards getting ready to learn.
