This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What do you do when you become upset? Do you have an area to go to when you need a break?
I work with students who have intellectual disabilities, from grades second through fifth-grade.
In my classroom, I have a wide range of academic levels and individual personalities. Incorporating many opportunities for my students to be successful with the curriculum, I structure my environment, integrating hands-on materials, technology, and kinesthetic activities, that allow each of my students to blossom in their own way, based on their developmentally appropriate needs.
My Project
My students need a safe place they can go to, when they are confronted with difficult situations they may encounter throughout the day. Because the majority of my students are nonverbal and are unable to express themselves, behaviors become the end result. I would like to create an area in the classroom that includes beanbag chairs, stress balls, playdough/putty, and a rocking chair, where they will be able to go to in order to deescalate to a calmer state. Not only will my students have a place of comfort to go to for a break, they can utilize these items to help them focus and regulate themselves, as they complete assignments or assigned tasks. By having this sensory area available, my students will be able to self monitor and deal with their own inner feelings, by removing themselves when needed, and by having the tools, to help in the process.
Incorporating these items, within my classroom, will give my students a chance to communicate their needs, when they need time away for themselves, and will assist them in dealing with challenges.
