Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I wish I could describe the excitement of my students as they entered our new classroom this year. The "oohs" and "ahhs" as each class crossed through the door melted my heart. I have taught fifth-grade science the last five years and made the change to art teacher this year. This is the first time in years that our students will have a full-time art teacher. Now I have all of our students Kindergarten through Fifth grade. So far, they have enjoyed getting to explore our new space, fun seating choices, and hands-on activities.
I wanted my art classroom to not look anything like a traditional classroom so all summer I've been gathering kitchen tables from garage sales and trading posts.
Now my students have brightly colored kitchen tables where they can create their masterpieces. My goal is to provide all my students with an engaging, fun, and safe learning environment. My school is Title I and located in a low socioeconomic neighborhood where 98% of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Most of my students are faced with many challenges in the classroom and at home.
My Project
Many of my students especially the younger ones Kindergarten and first grade struggle with using scissors. I believe if I do the cutting for them it takes away their time to practice so adding these new scissors maybe just the perfect way to encourage them to keep trying. The dual control scissors will allow me to cut with students and help me better show them proper cutting techniques since it has loops for students and teacher. The other dual control scissors have extra loops for students to separate their fingers giving them better control over the scissors and they're also offered in left and right handed. I have a few left handed students and am hoping these may help them continue to build their fine motor skills.
It's some what scary watching them hack away at paper, turning their wrists in some distorted way that it looks painful, and the paper confetti falling as they cut looks like something of an Edward Scissor hands meme.
All of our art projects are done in small groups while other students get the opportunity of STEAM stations. Sometimes students need a little extra help so I started adding fidget toys and sensory bottles to give them something to play with while they wait those few minutes. The Snake Twist puzzles are small and help them to stay seated while being "occupied". The Voss bottles, water beads, glitter and sequins will be used to create Sensory bottles. My students love these and I think they could flip them over, twist them around, and just watch the beads drift for hours.
Lastly, the gel crayons will give my students a new texture and medium to explore. They're softer than regular crayons, don't smear like oil pastels, but if you add water they turn into paint.
