My students need an indoor gym, trampoline, agility ladder, bubble tube, rain stick, and other sensory items to deescalate and return to learning tasks.
I am a 5th grade learning support teacher that collaborates with other learning support, emotional support, life skills support, and autistic support teachers in my intermediate school. We have students that are uniquely talented and energetic about learning. Our kids are are diagnosed with specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, autism, speech and language impairments, and other health impairments. We have a continuum of services with students being included in the general education classroom with co-teaching to others needing most instruction special education classroom.
In addition to academic supports, our job as special education teachers are also to shape behaviors; many students having both academic and behavioral needs in their IEPs.
Formal social skills classes are taught in addition to the frequent, on-the-spot individualized instruction to foster emotional regulation, communication, and coping skills. These ‘soft skills’ are arguably most important for daily functioning in the school and community.
My Project
Many of our students need scheduled gross motor, high intensity physical breaks while others need breaks with a purpose of de-escalation, emotional regulation, or sensory rewards.
Our students need opportunities to expel energy and emotions in a safe, controlled, and healthy way.
Currently, our options are very limited. I purchased hula hoops and a balance board to give my students some opportunity for movement, but their choice is limited. I am requesting a variety of gross motor and sensory objects for students. The indoor gym, trampoline, and agility ladder will help students with ADHD or an emotional disturbance who need an outlet for extra energy or emotions. The sensory objects like bubble tube and rain stick will aid students with autism, anxiety, and other health impairments. These will be used as a preventative measure for students to regain self-control to re-enter a learning environment. The addition of equipment and materials would benefit all students and staff in the school by maintaining a stable classroom environment because unique student needs are better met.
I envision a classroom inclusive to all needs. I am striving to create an atmosphere that is accepting, calming, and safe for students to be comfortable enough to take risks academically, socially, and emotionally. My vision is for a space that students can access meaningful brain breaks or sensory breaks and then return to the task, lesson, or classroom. A sensory room would be equipped with materials for any teacher or student to access, not limited to our special education department. We have been sensing a need as our population that we serve is changing.
