My Project
I work in a specially designed school for students on the Autism spectrum and with other neurodiversities. One of their common roadblocks to learning is overcoming their varied sensory issues. From overstimulation and the need to block out noises, to attention deficits and the need to fidget to be able to focus, to fine motor skills challenges and the need to use speech-to-text technology to write, these students need special tools to help meet their sensory needs.
These sensory tools will help my students regulate their emotional state and energy level to be able to stay calm, focused, and ready to engage with learning in the classroom.
The headsets and mice help the students to access technology to meet various communication needs, including text-to speech, speech-to text and other technology based learning tools. The noise cancelling headphones help the students to stay regulated and focused when noises from other students can be distracting or overloading to their senses. The fidgets and other sensory toys help the students' mental health and focus and provide calming sensory input to help them to stay regulated and ready to learn.
My students really are sensational people with very real and diverse sensory needs. They deserve the chance to thrive in the classroom and these tools will give them that opportunity.
