Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
During a typical school year, many of my students are faced with several obstacles both in and outside of the classroom and lack the resources to overcome them. Almost sixty percent of our students are economically disadvantaged, over twenty percent of students have special needs, and seventy percent are English Language Learners. Given the current pandemic, my team and I are committed to supporting the continued learning and social-emotional well being of our students.
Most of our students will be learning in person this year and we hope to present them with multi-sensory, hands-on materials to help them master their reading and math skills, while maintaining safety protocols.
This past spring, we purchased all materials and both delivered them to the homes of our students and also mailed some as well, but it came with a great cost. This year, we are excited to tackle the challenge of hybrid learning and are hoping to provide our students with learning kits, full of manipulatives, that they will use during our lessons this year. We will be having intensive blocks of instruction in phonics, math, reading and writing.
My Project
If our project is fully funded, we will be able to provide our struggling learners with the materials they need to be successful in the classroom. After a year of mostly virtual learning, many of our students returned at the end of April with stronger typing skills but weakened fine motor muscles and poor stamina for hand writing. They had many thoughts to communicate, but were hindered by pain and fatigue in their hands, after taking a break from writing for over a year. In addition, many students were not able to have the immediate corrective feedback for their letter and number formation or sentence structures and quickly became discouraged. We are asking for materials such as grippers, strengthening bands, wider pencils and fidget toys to directly target their stamina and muscle development. We will also provide them with fun opportunities to practice spelling and writing in the sand to master handwriting.
