My Project
I teach amazing seventh and eighth grade students with multiple disabilities. They come in every day no matter what challenges they may be trying to overcome, with a positive attitude and ready to work. Students with multiple disabilities are extremely varied in the way they learn and communicate. They communicate in a variety of ways; some using spoken words, others using sign language, a communication device, pictures, or even a smile or eye contact. I design learning experiences with a real world component, nonlinguistic representations, music, and the ability for each student to participate in the lesson in their own unique way, technology for each student as appropriate, as well as hands on activities because I have found a combination of all of these components help to establish student success.
My classroom is filled with diversity in learning styles; some of my students are verbal, others nonverbal, some can read easy text, while others cannot read text at all, some students have an attention span of 40 minutes and others 5 or 10 minutes.
No matter what activities my students are working on, they are working hard. I would love to incorporate the light box with sand, slime, or other manipulatives, therapy putty, wood puzzles, and emotional stress balls in sensory stations around the classroom so that when they need to, my students can take a much needed FUN break! I would love to try the recordable voice buttons with several of my nonverbal students. These buttons would allow students who can't easily access typical communication devices to simply press one button and have access to spoken language that is easily changed. I would be able to change the buttons frequently as content and subject matter changed throughout the school day.
