This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a school occupational therapist, I provide services to special needs students of all grade levels. My students are sweet, curious, loving, and can put a smile on anyone's face. They have a wide range of diagnoses including autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, developmental delay, cognitive impairments and more. They each have an individualized goal that aims to increase their success in the school environment.
Despite the challenges my students face due to their disabilities, they love coming to school, work incredibly hard, and wish to succeed.
With limited resources in a large city district, it is difficult to give my students everything they need to reach their fullest potential. That is why I am dreaming big with this project - because I want to give the most special and wonderful kids I know a room that will help them succeed in school and beyond.
My Project
Many of the elementary students in special education classrooms have significant sensory processing difficulties that impact their school performance and behavior. Many of these students have goals related to participating in school-related tasks following controlled sensory input. These students would benefit greatly from the establishment of a sensory room to help meet their goals. Students will be able to receive the sensory input they so crave throughout the day. This will help them feel regulated and ready to learn when they head back to their classrooms.
More and more schools are investing in sensory rooms because the results are incredible.
Students in general education classrooms would also benefit from the use of the sensory room as a place to calm and stimulate their senses. All of the items in my cart are intended to fulfill special education student's sensory needs. Items like a sensory light, lightening lamp, bubble maker, bubble tube, mirrors, and glitter wands will benefit students who seek visual stimulation. A pin artboard and sensory table will benefit students who seek touch stimulation. A tunnel, ball pit, punching bag, compression boat, swing, and trampoline will benefit students who seek deep pressure and movement.
