My Students

All of my students come from families that battle the struggles of poverty, trauma, living in the shelter system or projects, in a neighborhood where gunfire is a daily occurrence. In addition to their personal struggles outside of school, each of my students has a learning disability and has had many failures in their short educational careers before entering my classroom. Having looped with most of my students has been a blessing because I truly get to know their needs and cater to learning to meet their individual needs.

In a community plagued by violence and poverty, students should have the comfort knowing that school is a safe place where they can get their needs met.

This year, one of my goals has been to make my classroom library, specifically read alouds, more diverse and representational of my students' diverse backgrounds and learning needs. Seeing yourself, and connecting, to the books read aloud is essential for student growth and buy in with reading.

My Project

With COVID restrictions easing up, it is time to build up a sensational sensory station. This year, our sensory items must be personalized, ensuring that students are not sharing items needed to help with concentrate and focus. It's time to restock our sensory station with a new Theraputty and various fidget toys.

Each student in my classroom needs an individualized plan to learn, concentrate, and deal with their emotions to be at their best.

Sensory routines and breaks ensure that my students are always at their best. Twice a day, my students participate in sensory diets. We had had to retire our body sock due to holes in the toes.

Each year I teach my students to speak up for their needs. I work to give my students strategies and charges to advocate for their body regulation needs. Self-regulation, impacted by a person's emotions and life experiences, plays a large part in learning readiness. I believe that it is VITAL for student growth to engage in meaningful conversation about our feelings. Read alouds are the key to opening up discussions and giving students strategies for dealing with their feelings.
